The photo above shows a picture of me (on the right) and my brother at the top of Goat Fell on the beautiful Isle of Arran in July 2014. It’s it was 29 degrees centigrade that day and not quite the usual weather for the West of Scotland even in the summer! I don’t think I would have made it to the top had it not been for my footwear and not forgetting the bottled water 🙂
Whether you’re a fan of walking, running, cycling or climbing or even a mixture of all four, there are a wide and varied selection of footwear to choose from. When I go walking or climbing I tend to you good quality hiking or running shoes which have a decent layer of sponge and/or good grips.
I think if you’re climbing in less terrain and perhaps in the summer then, a pair of good running trainers with good ventilation and excellent grips will suffice, but if it’s a bit off-season or the ground is may be a bit boggy or has terrain then, you should certainly opt for a pair of good quality hiking shoes.
Do you think people conquer the K2 or Mount Everest without having the correct footwear? Absolutely not! They probably wouldn’t survive to tell the tale unless they had this along with a few other essential requirements.
The outdoors is a wonderful place and some where you can both find yourself and lose yourself and can bring real calm in this strange and chaotic world we’re all caught up in. I always enjoy a good brisk walk or climbing another English peak or a Scottish Corbett or Munro.

Usually if people are keen walkers they’ll go for a decent pair of running shoes and one’s which have grips that are suitable for the ground and/or the hills. You can make a similar comparison with an athlete in that, they’ll be looking for the best footwear with spikes for the best comfort and grip. If you are serious about getting the best experience from your walking and/or hiking shoes then, choose wisely!
Your feet take the brunt from the rest of your body, so why not treat them right? For me, your eyes for vision and your feet for walking and running offer up two of the most important parts for a human being and you should always look after them and maximize the potential they can give you.
